A film on the Binbi Meta Healthy Dwellings program
Ferment Collaborate created this film to showcase the inspiring and life changing work of Poy and Marcia Pensio through their Binbi Meta program, currently being delivered through Bidgerdii Community Health Service in Rockhampton.
The Binbi Meta (healthy dwelling) program was developed for Aboriginal, Torres Strait and South Sea Islander communities in Rockhampton, Queensland, to take ownership and control over their health and wellbeing, and make positive lifestyle changes.
The program aims to provide a holistic, family-driven initiative, that encompasses early intervention for children and adults in the health, developmental and wellbeing space, and to provide supported access to a range of allied health services and other community services. It also aims to encourage individual/family ownership of their own health.
The program uses the development of backyard gardens for fruit and vegetables in participants’ homes as an engagement tool, which includes information on recycling, food handling and storage, shopping, food labelling, tool maintenance and energy saving tips. Some additional program activities include healthy cooking, home education, and health checks.
Delivered by Bidgerdii Community Health Services in partnership with the Rockhampton Regional Council, The Smith Family, Darumbal, SAIMA, Central Queensland Indigenous Development, Fitzroy Basin Elders Committee, and Australian Red Cross, the program is supported by funding from the Australian Government’s Communities for children initiative.
About the film
The film was completed in November 2015 and showcases the work of Poy and Marcia through their own and former participants’ stories.
The film not only aims to promote the program but will also be used to assist with inducting new participants into the program, supporting them to understand how the program works and witness through former participant’s stories some of the potential effects of being involved.
